Conference Themes

The themes for iPRES 2025 are: Haerenga (Journey), Tūtaki (Encounter), and Tūhono (Connect). These themes encourage reflections on the evolving practices, innovations and partnerships shaping the future of digital preservation. Each theme reinforces the other, creating a holistic view of how digital preservation research and practice can adapt, innovate and thrive.

  • Haerenga (Journey) - This theme focuses on the broader narrative of digital preservation, emphasising the ongoing processes, challenges, and learning experiences practitioners face. It could include:

    • Challenges of technological obsolescence, resource limitations, and evolving standards

    • Lessons learned from successes and failures

    • Anticipation of future technological shifts such as cloud computing and AI

    • Discussions of how to ensure the continuity of preservation programmes and systems

    • Advancements in digital preservation strategies

  • Tūtaki (Encounter) - This theme is focused on innovation, disruption, and the re-evaluation of long-held norms. It could include:

    • Cutting-edge research and innovative practices that push the boundaries of traditional digital preservation

    • Revisits of previously accepted standards and strategies

    • Explorations of how we might adapt to or harness disruptions such as cloud migrations, big data, AI, climate change, and geopolitical shifts

  • Tūhono (Connect) - This theme is all about the importance of communities, collaboration and interdisciplinary work in digital preservation. This could include:

    • Multidisciplinary partnerships working together on large-scale preservation challenges

    • How indigenous knowledge or practices can inform preservation strategies

    • How commercial software companies manage their own long-term digital content

    • How practitioners can grow their own networks, advocate for the profession, and mentor the next generation of preservationists.
