Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa National Library of New Zealand (NLNZ), and Te Rua Mahara o Kāwanatanga Archives New Zealand (ANZ), your hosts for iPRES 2025, have long histories of active participation in the digital preservation community. Attending, presenting, and organising iPRES conferences over the years has helped us form lasting relationships, reinforcing the idea that our community itself is digital preservation’s greatest asset.
In 2003, the National Library of New Zealand Act was passed, providing the mandate for the Library to begin collecting and preserving New Zealand’s digital heritage in ways that ensure current and future access. This resulted in the establishment of the National Library’s digital preservation programme. Similarly, the Public Records Act 2005 (PRA) mandated Archives New Zealand responsible for the preservation of and access to the digital record of our government.
In 2004 the Library launched its National Digital Heritage Archive (NDHA) project, using the framework provided by NASA’s Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model. In 2006 the Library formed a development partnership with Ex Libris to build a digital archive and preservation management system. The resulting Rosetta digital preservation system was launched in October 2008. In 2010, Archives New Zealand established the Government Digital Archive (GDA), leveraging the Library’s Rosetta digital preservation system.
The National Library and Archives New Zealand have a shared policy programme for digital preservation activities. We are committed to working together to preserve digital content. The strategy ensures that the digital content is managed and preserved in a way that reflects its status as a knowledge asset and taonga (treasure) of New Zealand.
Additionally, 2025 will be a year of transformation for Archives New Zealand and the National Library, with the completion of new archives facilities, including a shared digital preservation lab. The new Archives building will provide the best possible facilities to preserve Aotearoa's records, and give the public better access to the nation's taonga.
